To whom I say that I read a course on willpower, they almost always answer me: “Oh, I don't have enough of it”. Today, more than ever, people understand that willpower — the ability to control attention, feelings, and desires — affects physical health, financial condition, close relationships, and professional success. We all know that. We know that we must completely control our life: what we eat, we do, we say, we buy. However, most people feel like losers on this path: in one moment they control themselves, and in the other - their feelings overwhelm and they lose control. According to the American Psychological Association, society believes that lack of willpower is the main cause of difficulties on the way to the goal. This prompted me to create a “Science of Willpower” course, which I read as part of an additional education program at Stanford University. The course summarizes the results of the latest research by psychologists, economists, neuroscientists, and doctors and explains how to break old habits and develop useful ones, overcome sluggishness, learn to focus and cope with stress. He reveals why we succumb to temptation and how to find the strength to resist. It shows how important it is to understand the limits of self-control, and suggests the best strategies for cultivating willpower. To my delight, the Science of Willpower quickly became one of the most popular courses that the Stanford Advanced Education Program has ever offered. At the very first lesson we had to change the audience four times in order to accommodate the continuously arriving public. Corporate managers, teachers, athletes, medical workers and other curious people filled one of Stanford's most spacious audiences. Students began to bring spouses, children and colleagues, to attach them to the cherished knowledge. I hoped that the course would be useful to this motley company. The goals of people who attended classes were different: someone wanted to quit smoking or lose weight, and someone wanted to get out of debt or become a good parent. But the result struck even me. Four weeks later, in the survey, 97 percent of the students reported that they began to better understand their own behavior, and 84 percent — that thanks to the proposed strategies, their willpower became stronger. By the end of the course, students told how they overcame a 30-year-old craving for sweets, finally paid taxes, stopped yelling at children, began to play sports regularly, and felt that they were generally more satisfied with themselves and were responsible for their decisions. Their appreciation of the course: he changed their lives. The students were unanimous: “Science of Willpower” gave them clear strategies for the development of self-control and the power to achieve what meant so much to them. The scientific findings were equally useful for both the recovering alcoholic and the person who could not tear himself away from e-mail. Self-control strategies helped people avoid temptations: chocolate, video games, shopping, and even a married colleague. Students attended classes to achieve personal goals such as running a marathon, starting a business, and coping. Many people feel guilty for letting down those around them. Many find themselves at the mercy of their own thoughts, feelings, preferences - their behavior is dictated by impulses rather than conscious choices. Even the most podatorevshie in self-control get tired of holding the defense and ask themselves, is it really life must be so hard. My job as a health psychologist and teacher in a health program at the medical school at Stanford University is to teach people how to manage stress and make healthy decisions. Over the years, I have watched people struggle with themselves to change their thoughts, feelings, bodies, and habits, and I realized that these sufferers' ideas of will power interfered with their success and caused unnecessary tension.
